As a mother and homemaker, my top priority is always my daughter. That is the reason why I am very much into investments and insurances. I want to protect her, her home, and her future. There are so many what-ifs in life and these double once we get married and have children. Just like any other aspect of our lives, our family life is not always high. Sometimes we experience challenges and problems and most often than not, we are not prepared for it.
But there are certain things that we can actually prepare for. One of which is something to do with our health. These days, the food that we eat and the environment that we are in can give us sickness. And when it comes to health problems, it can drain our finances and we can even go into debts just to pay for the cost of medicines, check-ups, and (knock on wood) hospitalizations.
Getting an HMO these days is no longer a luxury. It is a necessity, especially for average-income generating families like ours who could not afford the cost of hospitalization. Believe me, because I actually went into huge debt because of my daughter's hospitalization in the past few years.
Though my husband and I have already a Critical Illness Plan and made some investments like mutual funds, we did not have an HMO for ourselves because we found health insurances to be expensive. We only had Philhealth. And because of the daughter's hospitalization, the debt that we incurred did not allow us to get an HMO. Our salaries are no longer enough.
December last year, I learned about a very affordable HMO. It was super-duper good news for me. I am referring to the First Community Cooperative (FICCO) Healthcare Program wherein they have three options to choose from but with very affordable premiums. I was happy about it because I am already a member of the cooperative so I went there last week to inquire and enroll in the program.
For kids like my daughter, there is only one option and the annual premium is at P2,200.00 and it covers the following:

For kids like my daughter, there is only one option and the annual premium is at P2,200.00 and it covers the following:
- maximum benefit limit of P25,000.00 per illness per year
- outpatient consultation in accredited clinics
- laboratory and other diagnostic procedures
- elective minor operation (needs Philhealth)
- outpatient treatment of illness and injury in both accredited and non-accredited hospitals
- hospital confinement
- emergency confinement
- dental services (simple tooth extraction and annual consultation only)
- annual physical examination (chest xray and urine test)
- pre-existing condition -covered after 1 year
- Financial assistance - natural death - P10,000.00
- Financial assistance - accidental death - P20,000.00
- room and board- ward
I also got one for myself and the annual premium that I got costs P2,700.00 and I actually pay it in staggered. That means, I only need to pay P225.00 per month for the HMO. It covers the following:
- maximum benefit limit of P60,000.00 per year
- outpatient consultation in accredited clinics
- laboratory and other diagnostic procedures
- elective minor operation (needs Philhealth)
- outpatient treatment of illness and injury in both accredited and non-accredited hospitals
- hospital confinement

There are still 2 options for adult members and you can read more about it here.
I am happy to finally be able to further secure my family but just like any other insurances I got, I hope we will not be able to use it.
